Transformation Stage 4
Year: 2024
Media: Quilt
Dimensions: 25" x 33"
This quilt is part of a series that looks into the transformation of culture and self by forced or chosen migration. This quilt looks at the new that emerges within the change of environment and exchange of cultures. There are some things that are recognizable… the lines and connections to what once was are still present, but not recognizable on the surface. There is instinct, but not image. There is connection, but not celebration. There are names, but no identity.
I think about when I visited Sicily to explore my father’s heritage and found traditions of my mother’s Colombian heritage at play. Slightly confused, I then remembered that although oceans apart, these lands were both colonized by the same people at one point. As a hybrid of both cultures, raised in the states, there is significant distance to the cultural practices of my parents outside of food, but among my travels I realized my instinct was still very much attached and aware of some of these practices.
