This quilt is called When I dip, you dip, we dip! It is part of a series that looks into the collective power that comes with synchronized movement. When we move in masses it is an aww wonder to experience. A stadium show, a classic hustle or line dance, protests, witnessing the emergence dance of starlings in the sky, collective and community organizing wins, or seeing a live band all create magic and ppower through collective movement in some form.
This series continues to investigate the impact of movement and migration, but with a focus on the power of the dance floor and the cultures that are born through our collective movement.
When I was a young Cyborg, I remember finding freedom on the dance floor for the first time at a rave I snuck out to go see at the age of 13. I was a queer brown weirdo growing up in small town Indiana so you can imagine how incredibly delightful it was to discover anything remotely weird near me. I danced my pain away that night feeling, loving, and accepting my large body for the first time. The concept of individual healing through collective engagement fascinates me to this day. I think of this quilt as a snapshot of the dance floor that taught me about the embodiment of freedom.
