Music samples created for Automata, inspired by the dream system game.

Automata

Automata is a futuristic laser opera that uses music, performance, and popular education methods to elevate collective technological consciousness and agency. The storyline is designed collaboratively through games, educational zines, and workshops that engage communities in shaping future worlds that address the current social and political issues within Artificial Intelligence.

Holographic projections, 3D laser animations, adornment and clothing bring this concept album and story to life on stage through an epic operatic multimedia performance that merges rock opera and laser show to evoke an imagination of the future we rarely have access to.

It is through science fiction that  many of us first learn how to think about technology. Popular films shape how we think about what the future with AI will look like. These narratives often focus on machines that are conscious, who eventually attack their human creators, pushing us away from considering the potential of AI to unite us and help solve large scale- problems.

This work is inspired by the prompts in the last chapter of “A People’s Guide to AI” zine that asks readers to design libraries, neighborhoods, and forms of technology in the year 2084, To collaboratively design this future world I constructed “Dream System” — a two-part game in which participants create AI systems then write sci-fi stories about those systems in use. The results of the game then go on to inspired the construction of the Automata’s world, storyline, and character adornment.
