LET GO, LET TECHNO is an ode to Detroit’s dancefloor through psychedelic quilts reflecting the power we hold in collective form on the dancefloor. dive into the nature of the quests for freedom that can only be nurtured by nightfall. From the need to traverse borders to in the dark to flee our oppressors to the act of dancing your pain away under the moonlight, we all seek something better. These quits examine individual visions of freedom through a collective framework that says that when we transform ourselves, we transform the world around us. When we LET GO, LET TECHNO on the dancefloor, we tap into our collective potential, opening the possibility for that transformation to occur.
Honoring the goddess who witnesses our nightlife, on display are five phases of the moon; each constructed out of 2,500 little squares. Alongside the moons are two series of quilts that are psychedelic studies of transformation, looking at the change that occurs along our life's journeys and the drive needed to keep it moving. In addition, a series of quilts explore the constellations or forms we leave behind once that journey has been completed.
Let Go, Let Techno
The Moon is my Witness
Year: 2024
The first time I felt freedom was on the dancefloor. Since then, I have always seen the dancefloor as a powerful and sacred place that has the potential to heal, summon diaspora, and break down social and political structures that keep us from being our full selves. The dancefloor is a radical organizing space. With the right ingredients of music, lighting, and care for how we share space, we can collectively transcend our realities and bend spacetime at the will of our shuffling feet. This primordial power is especially potent in Detroit, the birthplace of Techno, where music was used as a visionary tool to build a world where Blackness and the fringes of society are centered. With the moon as our witness, decades of dancers have tapped into this vision, bringing it to fruition with every sway and droplet of sweat.
